Earlier this year, Tamron dropped a prime zoom lens w/ their f/2.8 17-70mm lens for Sony E-Mount cameras. Sigma didn’t want them to be the only one w/ a newer prime zoom lens for Sony shooters. Yesterday, Sigma unveiled their f/2.8 28-70mm zoom lens as a part of their Art series of lenses.
This new piece of glass multiple coatings to reduce flares, control contrast, & anti-ghosting. It also offers 16 elements in 12 groups w/ a 9-blade aperture + 3 aspherical elements. There’s a quiet autofocus system w/a single stepping motor that’s quiet and can be used w/ follow focus systems w/ ease as well. It has an aperture going from f/2.8 & going up to f/22.
There’s a 7.4inch minimum on the wide end and 14.9inch minimum on the long end of their focusing distance. For those of you seeking to grab an ND filter, this will support 67mm filters. It has a focus mode switch but does lack an AFL button/zoom lock switch that’s usually on Sigma Art models.
This new Sigma f/2.8 28-70mm lens will work on not only Sony’s E-mount as well as Leica’s L-mount. It is due out sometime in March for $899 which is actually $200 cheaper than their current lens w/ the same aperture + zoom range.
