As great as foldables have become over the past few years, there’s still one last hurdle to get over—the crease in the display. Of course, it’s not as noticeable after using it over time, but it’s still present. Spotted at CES, Samsung teased some new technology, which could remove that final hurdle: a crease-less display for upcoming folding phones.
Samsung’s Research & Development engineers pulled this off by pairing an OLED panel with a laser-drilled metal plate, which helps circulate the stress from opening and closing a folding phone and creates a seamless display. The company calls it their Advanced Crease-less panel for seamless reading.
We’re sure this will make its way to an upcoming Galaxy Z Fold device, but it could also be the star of Apple’s upcoming folding iPhone as well. According to a credible report, Apple is using a similar metal plate and setup for its iPhone Fold. The report also suggests Apple’s display requirement was to have a crease-free screen, and Samsung has reportedly removed the display setup at CES, so it’s likely this is the one Apple will use.
It’s exciting to finally get a seamless screen on a foldable. If this is the iPhone Fold’s screen, don’t expect Apple to shout out Samsung at the keynote.
