Google threw the tech world for a loop back in November, when it announced AirDrop support for its Pixel 10 phones. And not a third-party AirDrop alternative, but they figured out a workaround for the Quick Share and AirDrop features to work hand-in-hand.

The folks over at Android Authority were amongst the press briefing at Google’s Taipei offices this week, along with other media and influencers. Google’s VP of Engineering, Eric Kay, revealed that support for AirDrop will be expanding to other Android devices.

The company used the Pixel 10 series as an experiment to test out the waters and has since succeeded. Kay said that “Google is currently working with its partners to expand the feature to the rest of the Android ecosystem, and official announcements for it are coming very soon.”

Since AirDrop support for Android was announced, it’s been exclusive to Google’s recent flagship phone. I’m curious to see which Android device gets chosen next. However, the question remains as to when it will happen. We don’t yet know whether it will arrive as part of Samsung Unpacked with the Galaxy S26 launch (maybe), during MWC, or be unveiled via press release for an upcoming Pixel Drop. Whenever it arrives, it will be another step toward greater platform interoperability.
