Yesterday, Google announced a new Gemini app for the Mac. This isn’t a quick workup either, as this is a system-wide assistant you can pull up anytime in the form of a floating chat bubble. It’s free to use, just as long as your Mac is running macOS 15 or higher.
Once downloaded, you can access the AI assistant anywhere by pressing the keyboard shortcut of Option and the spacebar—all without having to switch windows. There you can do everything one would normally do with Gemini, including accessing previous chats, creating images and video and music, sharing windows, and adding files, photos, or Drive documents.
The Gemini app looks and behaves similarly to Apple’s Spotlight. I guess we can consider this a precursor to what the Google Gemini-powered Siri may look and feel like, which is reportedly coming soon to all things Apple.
